Barbarian (2022)
Barbarian made a splash at the box office, grossing $45.4 million worldwide. It was writer and director Zach Creggor’s solo screenwriting debut, and follows a woman named Tess who finds herself staying in a double booked rental home. It is available to stream on Hulu premium, Youtube TV, it is available to rent on Amazon Prime, and others.
Lace Crater (2015)
Available to rent on Prime video, Lace Crater follows the heartbreaking consequences of a woman’s one night stand with a ghost. Written and directed by Harrison Atkins, this film premiered at TIFF in 2015 and had its American premiere at Cucalorus in 2016.
It follows (2014)
It’s a classic for a reason! It Follows, which is available on Netflix, was written and directed by David Robert Mitchell. It tells the story of a creature that moves at a walking pace always in the direction of its target, unable to be deterred unless the target has sex with someone else, passing on the curse. It is critically acclaimed and well regarded by horror lovers.
Downrange (2017)
Downrange was directed by Ryuhei Kitamura and written by Ryuhei Kitamura & Joey O’Bryan. It’s available to stream on AMC+ and Shudder. According to our resident horror queen, Charlie Monroe: “This movie is mean. A group of strangers decides to carpool across a desert together, when they become stranded on a desolate road, nothing but sand and shrubbery and a few trees for untold miles. Then, one by one, they begin to be picked off by a lone sniper who has, for no apparent reason, decided to hole up somewhere in this desert and kill everyone who crosses his path.”
I Saw The Devil (2010)
This South Korean horror film has its US premiere at Sundance and is considered highly disturbing. It follows an NIS agent on a quest for revenge after the brutal murder of his wife. Directed by Kim Jee-woon and written by Park Hoon-jung, I Saw The Devil is available to stream on Hulu.
I Saw The TV Glow (2024)
I Saw The TV Glow, from A24, is a horror drama written and directed by Jane Schoebrun. This indie horror film follows two high school students whose favorite TV show drives them to question their identities and realities. It premiered at Sundance and can be rented on Apple TV, Youtube, or Amazon Prime.
CERDITA (English: Piggy) (2022)
Carlota Pereda wrote and directed this film, which started as a short film available on ALTER. The English dub is available on Hulu, but we recommend watching it in the original Spanish in subtitles, available to rent on Apple TV or Prime. This film can be challenging to watch with its themes of dehumanization. After being the victim of horrific fat phobic bullying, a teenager becomes complicit in a series of brutal crimes.
The Babadook (2014)
This is a movie that turns people into horror lovers. This Australian indie horror film, written and directed by Jennifer Kent, is available on Netflix. The film follows a grieving single mother and her son who begin to be plagued with strange, eerie events, including the delivery of a book called Mister Babadook. If you’re new to horror, it’s a much-watch this Halloween.
