How to embrace Scorpio Season as a creative
Scorpios get a bad rap. I would know: I am not only a Scorpio sun, but I actually have SEVEN placements in this misunderstood sign\. I’ve heard all the stereotypes: Scorpios are evil, they’re the villains of the zodiac, they can’t be trusted. These stereotypes made me very skeptical of astrology for a long time, because I generally think of myself as a warm, loving, and compassionate person. Now that I know more about astrology, I realize that these stereotypes are simply misunderstandings. Now I understand what Scorpio represents, and I’m better able to understand myself and create systems that work for me. Scorpio Season is now one of my favorite times of the year!
Even if you don’t have a single Scorpio placement in your chart, you can learn something from this watery sign. Here are some thoughts on how to embrace Scorpio Season as a creative; what to lean into, what to avoid, and how to care for yourself as the days get shorter.
It’s about intensity, not evil
The first thing to know is that Scorpio has nothing to do with evil. Instead, it has to do with intensity. Intensity can be a very good thing! There are lots of worthwhile accomplishments that can feel very intense; running a marathon, writing a book, even giving birth. Intense experiences can be extremely impactful and rewarding. They can also be devastating; if someone is intensely unkind, for example, that can leave a lasting mark.
I know that I’m an intense person. As a child, I believed the narrative that this was a bad thing, but I’ve come to realize that when I use my powers for good, it’s actually wonderful. I like to have deep, intense conversations about things that matter to me. I like to fully commit to relationships, which makes me a ride or die friend. I’m intense about my art; I spend a lot of time working on or talking about my writing. I’m also intense about my job. It’s vitally important to me that I do a good job and provide value to my employer. Basically, I’m not someone who does things halfway.
Like I said, even if you don’t have a single Scorpio placement, as a creative you can still take lessons from this sign and this season. Here are some examples of ways you can embrace the intensity of Scorpio Season as a creative:
- Block out long periods of time to work on your art, allowing yourself to really sink into your process. Rather than working for an hour here and there, see if there’s a day where you can really dive in for multiple hours at a time. This allows you to get to the heart of your project and think intensively about what you’re trying to create.
- Explore intense topics. Scorpios are known for their obsession with death, and if I’m any indication, that’s not just a stereotype. What intense topics does your work explore? While I like to write fiction for young readers, I don’t shy away from exploring things like grief, trauma, death, and other forms of loss. This doesn’t mean you need to work in the horror space or create an incredibly dark piece of art; it simply means that you could take this opportunity to explore intense topics and see what comes from that.
- Lean into sensuality. Scorpios are known for being very sensual. What would it be like to work with the lights dimmed and candles lit? What if you burned incense? What if you experimented with more saturated colors, lush prose, or deeper flavors? Try an experiment where you lean into the sensuality of your creation, almost as if you’re taking yourself on a solo date. What can you accomplish?
- Don’t be afraid of emotion. Scorpios are a water sign. This means that they are often very emotional and intuitive. This Scorpio Season, as you create, don’t be afraid of leaning into emotion; either your own or the emotions present in your work. Write a scene that makes you cry. Create a playlist of songs that bring out deep feelings in you. Paint a picture inspired by longing. Just don’t be afraid of emotion! Art is supposed to help both the creator and the audience process feelings. This Scorpio season, lean into that.
How to embrace Scorpio Season as a creative
The days are getting shorter and spooky season is here. Regardless of who you are and what you’re creating, leaning into that seasonality can only make you more productive. Here are a few more tips for taking care of yourself this time of year.
- Make sure you’re able to get some time in the sunlight on a regular basis. My office has big windows, which is great, but I also like to make sure I go for a short walk outside when the weather allows, or I drink my morning coffee outside to kick start my day with some vitamin D.
- Recognize your body’s natural rhythms. For many people, fall is a time to relax a little more after the hustle and bustle of summer. During the summer, you may have a more packed calendar, trips planned, and kids home from school. In nature, fall is a time of winding down for the fallow period of winter. If possible, use this time to pack your schedule a little less tightly, unwind a little more, and get ready for a long winter ahead. This doesn’t mean you have to take a step back from your art if you’d prefer not to, but you should allow yourself a slower pace and more grace if possible.
- When you feel intense feelings or are dealing with intense subject matters, make sure to protect yourself. I’m a horror lover who usually needs an hour or so before bed to unwind after consuming more intense media. If I write a death scene and it has me in my feels, I like to go for a short walk or do a few minutes of yoga to get back into a positive headspace before moving on. When I’m feeling emotional–about art or other things–it’s important that I take a beat to regulate before trying to do anything challenging. Your needs are likely different from mine, but make sure you’re caring for yourself physically and emotionally during this intensive season!
