If you’re an artist who is interested in using esoteric tools to improve your craft, here are three books that might be useful to you. These aren’t craft books, they are books that either focus on using mystical, magical, spiritual tools to make art, or simply delve into these oracles to help you create a deeper understanding of them.
The Maker’s Guide to Magic
Author: Andrea Hannah
Andrea Hannah’s work around healthy creativity, esoteric tools, and creation is life changing. I’ve been lucky enough to attend multiple classes, workshops, and retreats run by this author and astrologer, and I can’t say enough about how it’s revolutionized my work as a writer. If you’re a writer (or any type of creative) this book belongs on your bookshelf.
Radical Tarot
Author: Charlie Claire Burgess
This book isn’t specifically for artists, but anyone who is interested in tarot will benefit from this guide to queering the cards and using tarot to create their future. Burgess provides context, history, and interpretation for every card in the deck. They also designed the Fifth Spirit tarot deck, which breaks away from binaries and makes an excellent companion to your deck collection.
You Were Born for This: Astrology for Radical Self-Acceptance
Author: Chani Nicholas
If you’re into astrology, you’ve no doubt heard of Chani Nicholas, who is responsible for giving us the CHANI app. In this book, she teaches you how to take your natal chart and use it to understand yourself and move yourself towards radical self-acceptance. While this isn’t designed specifically for artists, all human beings can benefit from it, and diving into your birth chart is sure to give you a clearer picture of your purpose, why you’re driven to create, and what to do with that.
