Opening your throat chakra for writing
Writing is communication. It doesn’t matter if you’re writing a screenplay full of dialogue, a novel, or an essay; you have a story or idea you want to convey. The throat chakra, or Vishuddha, rules communication, including written communication. Sometimes, when you feel blocked, anxious about your writing, or like your meaning is not coming across the way you intended, it means that your throat chakra is blocked or low energy. Ancient wisdom tells us that a blocked or low energy chakra can even result in physical symptoms; in this case, it may present as a sore throat, laryngitis, or mouth sores.
Chakras are energy points throughout your body. While there are many chakras–some say up to 114–the primary seven are aligned from the base of your spine to the top of your head. Your throat chakra is the fifth chakra, and is situated in your throat.
If you think your throat chakra is blocked or low energy, here is how to open your throat chakra for writing.
Try neck and throat yoga poses
Each chakra is associated with an element. The throat chakra is associated with ether, which is all about space. Try yoga poses that create space in your neck and throat, or yoga poses that release the neck muscles. Some good examples to try are fish pose, plow pose, and shoulder stand. Try to hold the pose for a few breaths and see how you feel afterwards.
If yoga isn’t your thing, or your mobility is limited, you can also try gently stretching your neck muscles. Close your eyes and tilt your ear towards one shoulder, then do the same on the other side. Gently and slowly roll your neck in a circular motion. These stretches are great for opening your throat chakra for writing.
Incorporate the color blue
Each chakra is also associated with a color. The throat chakra is blue. This means that incorporating the color blue in your creative routine may serve to open up the throat chakra. There are many ways to do this. One easy way is to decorate your workspace with blue crystals like aquamarine, lapis lazuli, or blue lace agate. You can also wear a necklace with a blue stone, which holds that energy close to your throat chakra.
Burn lavender incense
I personally love to burn incense while I’m writing. The scent tells my brain that it’s time for me to focus on my work, and becomes a subconscious cue that helps me be more productive. If you want to burn incense to open your throat chakra for writing, lavender incense is a great pick. I like to buy it at my local metaphysical store, but Amazon has options, including some that are specifically for your throat chakra.
If you don’t like incense, you can try to work with lavender by getting a lavender candle to burn while writing, you can diffuse lavender essential oil, or you can put a sprig of lavender in your workspace. You can even burn lavender bundles, but unless you are part of specific indigenous communities, make sure you are not purchasing any smudge sticks or any bundles containing white sage, as smudging and the use of white sage are closed practices and should not be purchased or used by people outside of certain communities. Smoke cleansing or burning herbs are not closed practices and can be utilized by people of all backgrounds.
Journal
Journaling, especially around issues of communication, is a great way to open your throat chakra. Spend some time reflecting on your communication and then spend a few minutes free writing. Questions to ask yourself include:
- What does authenticity mean to me, and how do I communicate authentically with the people in my life?
- What inner truth am I trying to express in my writing at the present moment?
- Reflect on this statement: I have something important to say and I have the tools to say it.
- In what way are words powerful? How do I wield power through my communication?
Complete a chakra meditation
I’ve written about the power of meditation for creative people before, and I will never stop talking about meditation’s benefits! Meditation is a powerful tool. Chakra meditations typically take you through each of your seven chakras one at a time, and allow you to sense how you feel in your body. Depending on the chakra mediation you choose, you may be asked to breathe into your chakras or send energy to them. You can read about how to get started with meditation here, or if you’re already a pro, simply look up a guided meditation on your preferred platform.
